Norma Kamali never shies away from thinking outside the proverbial box. The CFDA member has always been a step ahead, anticipating the cultural shifts that will determine the way we live. Take, for example, her influential designs such as the blanket coat and parachute dress, or her Sweats collection which revolutionized fashion.
Kamali’s newest innovation, NORMAKAMA Lifestyle, speaks to the designer’s ethos. Determined to adapt to rising global manufacturing costs without sacrificing quality or design, Kamali created a collection with every piece retailing under $200.
“The tariffs hit hard and we were impacted as well as everyone else,” Kamali said. “While I was working on the spring collection, I realized I needed to do another collection simultaneously under $200 retail. We have a broad client base in age due to the many years I am in business. However, our main demographic is 25-35, and she loves to shop a lot because she is developing her personal style and is super social.”
To that end, Kamali created a new uniform featuring tops, skirts, pants, jumpsuits, dresses, and gowns.
Each piece is designed to be versatile, comfortable, and washable with longevity in mind.
“I decided the most fun for her would be a selection of looks that could be styled a million different ways, and that the accessories, layering and style combinations would be fun and endless…and in her budget,” Kamali said, noting that the customer could then invest in other styles from the main collection at higher price points “to make each look super-special, over and above the fun styling.”
The collection experience extends to the in-store installations to enhance the NORMAKAMA Lifestyle experience and, she said, “come shop the looks, see the styles, and meet me and the team in person.”
And what’s better than that?
