Natalie Chanin took an organic approach to launching her own company and developing its ethos.

Alabama Chanin grew from Chanin’s idea for a capsule collection for New York Fashion week over 15 years ago.  She enlisted local artisans who understood the quality and precision that she sought for the line.  From that point on, there was no turning back. Her passion and desire to celebrate local artisans continued to grow while she stayed true to focusing on sustainable garments.  “Our earliest garments were made from recycled T-shirts,” she said. “Though we now use responsibly-sourced organic cotton jersey. The sustainability factor was a natural outgrowth of what I practiced from the very beginning. Plus, the more you learn about the fast fashion-driven practices of the fashion industry, the harder it is to justify supporting practices that pollute our earth and enable a near-unbreakable cycle of poverty in entire regions and cultures.”

Headquartered in Florence, Alabama, the designer takes the initiative to support the Southern maker community.  She frequently collaborates with local artists and artisans to add depth and meaning to her collections. Over the years, her efforts to seek out Southern suppliers have provided her with many benefits, accessibility being one. The collaboration works both ways. With her support, these suppliers are able to grow their businesses and maintain their livelihoods.

Chanin has expanded her brand to a “family” of businesses. She runs a café, flagship store and design studio, all in one central location.  “All facets work together to create a collaborative community and idea exchange, healthy growth, and a love of quality goods that last,” she explained. “Our guests can visit to shop with us, eat with us, learn with us (through our workshops), and tour our facility to see the entire operation.”

It does not stop there. In order to help customers better understand the what, why, and how of an organic supply chain, the factory holds workshops and DIY classes. The designer has much on the horizon. Alabama Chanin will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary this fall. The brand is also introducing Core Basics styles, and a capsule collection inspired by James Beard award-winning chef Ashley Christensen this summer. The next time that you’re in Alabama, stop by for the local Southern vibe.
