Monique Lhuillier Fall 2020

Monique Lhuillier is in a celebratory mood. The designer has opened a two-story flagship store in a  Madison Avenue townhouse and is set to debut her first fragrance—as well as a rather lovely lingerie line—in the new year. No wonder, then, she’s letting loose for Fall 2020. “I wanted to strip off all the layers and all the rigid constructions of previous seasons and make her feel more fluid,” Lhuillier said of her latest collection. “There’s a nod to simplicity in the shapes, but always with an element of surprise, whether it’s marabou feathers, ombré flocked tulle, or colorblocking.”

Lhuillier has a fantastic sense for glamour—of both refined and relaxed standards—and this season, it was informed by a languid elegance with a clear nod to the 90s. Those signature frothy ballgowns of hers gave way to more fluid silhouettes: A chiffon strapless dress in shocking pink with a slit cut up to there; a slinky blue velvet number with a single sleeve that wrapped around the body; and the perfect “going-out top” melded with pleated palazzo pants. Not every woman needs an evening gown, after all, but we all need those great, versatile pieces that work for any special occasion. As Lhuillier said herself: ”Sometimes [our customer] just wants to pop in for a statement top or pants to wear for entertaining over the weekend—it’s not only red carpet events that she’s going to.”

Lhuillier isn’t one to sacrifice fun in the name of practicality, though. The meant featuring more transformative extras than ever before: A gold metallic fil coupé drop-waist dress was topped with a matching skinny scarf; a floral poppy princess style in pebbled organza came with a detachable bolero jacket masquerading as balloon sleeves; and an off-the-shoulder gown with 3D petal embroidery had a removable cummerbund that extended into a dramatic train.

Nor did she skimp on bold color—see the draped faille bodice top in vibrant teal paired with a tangerine ballskirt. As for her usual embellishments, there were plenty of rich details to go around. The pair of high-low gowns in pastel pink and powder blue with a swirl of feathers peeking out from the hem will make the Monique Lhuillier purist’s heart go pitter-patter, particularly for evenings whether red carpet–bound or otherwise.
