Monique Lhuillier Fall 2020 Bridal

Monique Lhuillier is always looking for the next big thing in bridal. She was one of the first to dip into color, sending out unexpected shades of latte and blush several seasons ago. “Every bride wants her wedding to be different than anything she’s seen before, and it’s hard to do that in white or ivory,” Lhuillier said on the phone from Los Angeles, where everything is made in her atelier.

“But with color, you can really differentiate yourself and your style. After many years, brides are so ready for color,” she added.

Her Fall 2020 offering was a riot of pastels— and prints! —plus epic proportions that we hadn’t seen from Lhuillier before. Case in point: While shooting the collection at an Italian villa in Lake Como, the Monique Lhuillier team was moved to tears at the sight of one larger-than-life ballgown in pink silk organza—made even grander by a royal-length veil with giant rosettes.

Florals are quintessentially “Lhuillier,” and this season’s interpretations ranged from a ballgown with poet sleeves in a whimsical botanical and butterfly print; a floral jacquard gown woven with metallic thread; and an off-the-shoulder princess dress scattered with 3-D petal embroideries.

Every look had a matching veil, and many also came with a detachable jacket or bolero. They’ll be perfect for those who want to cover up for the ceremony and let loose at the reception without buying two dresses. Much like her approach to color, the season was about giving brides new ways to switch things up. As she said herself: “There were no limits. More is more.”
