Barbara Sanchez-Kane is a Mexican menswear designer with a background in industrial engineering—a fact that pronounces itself throughout the collections she designs for her label Sanchez-Kane. She launched the line in 2015 after graduating with a degree in fashion design from the Polimoda Institute in Florence, Italy.

Her Spring/Summer 2016 debut collection, “Courage of the Brave,” was presented during Los Angeles Fashion Week. She also showed as a finalist at VFILES Runway 7 during New York Fashion Week.

Sanchez-Kane draws on her Mexican heritage to create alternate realities, reimagining masculinity in a world where that has become somewhat stringent. Her “Citizen Sanchez-Kane” collection, for examples, aims to create new vision of masculinity— less restricted by today’s permitters of hyper-masculinity, emasculation and male sensitivities and imagining a world wherein Eve, not Adam, is the first creation.

On why she gravitated towards menswear, Sanchez-Kane said, “I think I specialize in menswear because I have a background in engineering — a world with more rigid and stable shapes — what I see in the male body.”

It’s this combination of industrial harshness and volatility of “emotional chaos” that makes each of her collections feel like a new world.
