Feng Chen Wang offers her own unique vision of masculinity and menswear. Pulling inspiration from real life experiences, missed connections and the beauty of human interaction, Wang’s eponymous label has risen to the forefront of contemporary menswear. Shortly after graduating from Royal College of Art with a Master’s in Fashion Menswear, she made her runway debut at New York Fashion Week as part of the VFILES runway show for Spring/Summer 2016.
Reflecting on the vision of masculinity she creates with her designs, Wang conceded that “for me, masculinity is very complex. On the one hand, I think about it in terms of a concept which I can freely deconstruct, and when I apply this to design, it’s about how I can push the boundaries by focusing on details. On the other hand, it’s about a combination of practicalities like fusing lifestyle, sport and sculpture, all of which are underpinned by functionality.”
The type of minimal-yet-forward thinking landed the London-based designer a nomination for the LVMH Prize in 2016.
Although Wang is a menswear designer, she explains that as a woman designing for men, she wants “both men and women to wear my clothes and in this way I disrupt the system” using small details such as “3D lettering or internal constructions that no one sees” to “explore the bigger concepts.”
Mixing a unique vision and combination of craft and concept, Wang has zeroed in on “a process which explores what lies beneath the surface.” And by doing so, she takes fashion to a new dimension.
