Meet Nick Graham, the Space Cadet

August 21, 2019

That Nick Graham finds sartorial inspiration in all things space is no secret.

He has been interested in it since he was a kid and remains inspired by the continued influence space has on fashion, from styling to technology and fabrics that were developed in conjunction with the space program. He has also used a space theme for many of his collections, including the 2017 “Life on Mars” show at New York Fashion Week: Men’s, which featured astronaut icon Buzz Aldrin on the runway. As Graham put it, “Space is the new black.”

It’s been 50 years since that historic moment, and timed to Apollo 11’s anniversary, Graham was a sponsor at last month’s Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Gala at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The Apollo Nick Graham Golden Galactic Award.

Dressed in silver suits, Graham and his team were tasked to select the most innovative and exciting fashion outfit out of the nearly 1,000 guests. The winner took home a 14″ rocket covered in Swarovski crystals. Graham also designed a limited edition bomber jacket that was sold to raise funds for the Aldrin Family Foundation to promote STEAM education. The jackets were available in silver metallic and black, featuring an interior lining showing the lift-off of the Saturn 5 rocket on July 16, 1969.

For the silent auction, a one of a kind hand-embroidered bomber was created with the NASA logo made out of 2,000 Swarovski crystals. Another pièce de résistance was a performance by Duran Duran.

While presenting the award, Graham thanked the space community for the influence it’s had on music, fashion and style over the last 50 years.

“It’s just something I think that needed to be said,” he explained. “Not only was Apollo 11 a heroic feet of engineering, but it also had a significant impact on generations of designers and musicians in countless ways.”
