Lela Rose sure knows how to throw a party. On Thursday afternoon, the designer presented her Spring 2020 Bridal collection at Pier 62’s carousel pavilion (complete with pretzel carts, pink cotton candy sprinkled with edible flower petals, and bottles of French cider). While overlooking the Hudson River, models twirled on the merry go round, as did a three-piece jazz band playing ragtime tunes.
“We love to pick a setting that’s fun and has a romantic feel to it, but not overly romantic,” Rose said at the presentation. The same could be said for the new collection, which was filled with fresh and pretty wedding looks that were sweet without seeming saccharine. Citing her mother and grandmother as inspiration, Rose wove in heirloom-inspired brooches that dotted a mini dress with puff sleeves that caped off the shoulders. “This collection is about who are you and where you come from,” she added. “But what we really want you to do is get your grandmother’s brooches—or anything that is sentimental to you—and add your own touch to it.”
Rose also introduced several looks spun from pleated Chantilly lace, like a long-sleeve gown with a bustier bodice trimmed in pearls—a signature detail the designer has carried through several seasons. As always, the collection catered to a variety of brides, a hallmark of Rose’s brand that has remained rock-solid, along with a sense of ease. Princess brides will find their fairytale moment in the A-line gown of embossed vine fil coupé. Those tying the knot in a civil ceremony will want to suit up in the sleeveless blazer vest and slim pants. Minimalists will meet their match in the crêpe halter dress with detachable organza peony at the collar. Personal style and setting aside, the Lela Rose bride wants a look that feels as fun as the wedding itself.
