California through and through. That’s how Jenni Kayne would describe her brand and herself, having grown up in Los Angeles and built her namesake label in her own backyard. After years of pioneering her town, the momentum is on her side, not just with other designers taking up residence in the city she calls home, but also with groundswell of interest in all things California.
“I am viewed as a very California brand and people are looking to California and living well and lifestyle a lot more,” the designer said of that laidback lifestyle that she’s brought to life in a line of easily wearable separates, sumptuous knits and her very popular D’Orsay flat. .
Of the casual uniform and signature aesthetic that she’s built her business upon, she said, “It has made it more difficult to scale the business into other areas, to grow our customer base, but I feel like I am a very California designer. That’s how I live and how I dress and what our customers want from us here.” And that they do.
While her shoes are made in Italy, Kayne has begun to move her collection production to Los Angeles, taking advantage of the city’s vast manufacturing resources and keeping everything a bit closer to home.
Speaking of home, Kayne just launched her own branded home collection, which her customers have been waiting for. In the neutral palette that seems to be a signature, the collection dropped on the heels of a heavenly neutral collaboration with Parachute. Home for Jenni is literally where the heart is, with a passion for all things décor and a keen sense of interiors— so much so that Jenni and her team renovated an airstream which will be touring the country with her new home collection in tow.
“I started following Modern Caravan and they redo airstreams, and at the same time, we were launching home. My team really ran with it,” she said of the multi-city tour that spans Austin, Nashville and New York.
But while California has been where Kayne has cut her cloth, she’s also keen to expand her reach. The designer opened her sixth retail space in New York last week.
“I am such a California brand and the majority of my customers are in California, so opening stores, it was never a question that we would try and open as many in the right markets in California as possible before we went anywhere else,” she conceded. But the time felt right for Tribeca, her sixth boutique spot featuring a heavy helping of knits, shoes, giftables and home.
It seems no matter the category or location, California will always be home.
