In the late 1940s, Kansas City’s Garment District employed over 4,000 people and produced so many items, the city boasted that one out of every seven women in the United States purchased garments made in Kansas City. Throughout the successful production of over 10 fashion week seasons, Kansas City Fashion Week (KCFW) has helped refocus the region’s attention to the commercial possibilities of a revitalized apparel design and manufacturing industry. The mission continues as the KCFW Fall/Winter 2021 runway show season returns from today, September 22, through Saturday, September 25. After several months of carefully working on pivoting KCFW to new, uncharted ways of bringing designer collections to buyers and the public through virtual runway shows and online meetings, the CFDA Connects member will transform the East Parking Structure at Overland Park’s Oak Park Mall — the largest mall in the Kansas City Metro Area (as well as the entire state of Kansas). The parking structure has been converted into an innovative, outdoor runway venue that is committed to keeping guests and participants safe with the ever-evolving Covid-19 regulations.
“After an extremely tough year for many, Kansas City Fashion Week is eager and enthusiastic to be able to welcome our guests, designers, and participants back to in-person runway shows in a safe, and innovative way,” said KCFW President Teisha Barber. “KCFW, partnered with longtime sponsor Oak Park Mall, has transformed a parking structure into an entire Kansas City Fashion Week experience this season, held September 22nd through 25th. We are so proud of what we have accomplished with pivoting to virtual shows for the past two seasons. Now we’re ready to hit the ground running and get everyone back to the runway shows that they know and love while viewing 32 incredible designer collections right from the runway.”
