Jonathan Simkhai Fall-Winter 2021

Jonathan SImkhai found inspiration by chance this season. While browsing through a coffee table book, he stumbled upon an image by Tseng Kwong Chi. Pictured was Keith Haring’s 1983 painting “Into 84,” which was created in collaboration with Haring’s choreographer Bill T. Jones and depicted beautifully by Kwong Chi, a longtime friend of the artist. This led to a theme of kinship, connection, and artisanship served as central themes to the designer’s work this season.
Simkhai expanded on his signature knits, created in collaboration with Amantani, a family-owned business in Peru using locally sustainably sourced Royal Alpaca Yarn. Weaved expertly into form-fitting tops and floor-length dresses, the knits are also combined with a variety of fabrications – from vegan leathers to washed silks and a custom lace. Simkhai also teamed up with Aesther Ekme, a Danish goods label, to make his first foray into handbags with architectural shapes that nicely compliment the clothing. These wonderful collaborations injected this succinct collection with a sense of optimism and comfort for the future of fashion.
