Introducing a Briefing on Diversity & Inclusion in American Fashion

January 7, 2019

Joseph Corchado Maglieri

Make no mistake. The American fashion industry – or for that matter, the industry worldwide – has so far struggled to reflect the diversity of its constituents and incorporate the inclusion it requires. It’s crucial for our industry to understand that diversity and inclusion are not a trend, but the way every company should operate.

The time for change is now, and the CFDA, in beginning this work with PVH Corp., took a step to hold the industry and ourselves accountable. In late October, we gathered top industry executives at a half-day conference to talk through the issues our industry is facing, come up with actionable ways to address them, and forge a path for meaningful and long-lasting change.

The conference became the foundation of an industry briefing on diversity and inclusion. The briefing is a blend of the day’s findings as well as further information, such as insider/outsider dynamics; the creative and ethical case, and how diversity and inclusion helps businesses to better address consumers’ needs. The goal of the briefing is to bring awareness and start the education around all aspects of diversity and inclusion, including, but not limited to, abilities, age, gender, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation.

A long-term meaningful solution needs the support and courage of top leaders who prioritize its enforcement. Leadership and understanding of this will solidify our position as business stewards, and creative thinkers, fostering a strong, enticing home to top talent – and a fashion industry for all.
