It’s near-impossible not to take notice of the bright hues and sleek silhouettes defining the Araks collection. Renowned for color, Araks Yeramyan expanded her lingerie line into swimwear in 2013 and has attracted a high-profile fan base from Scarlett Johansson to Sofia Coppola. We talked to the designer, who is part of the CFDA Beach House at Fred Segal on Sunset, about her summer travels and this season’s must-have items.
How do you plan to spend this summer? Do you have any exciting summer plans?
My family traditionally alternates weekends throughout the summer, spending time in upstate New York and the beach. This summer I will also be traveling to Beaver Creek in Colorado. I love the Midwest – everything about it feels completely different from the East Coast. I also love to hike, and Beaver Creek is known for its trails so I am really looking forward to this trip.
Describe your summer style.
My look is definitely more casual in the summer. I wear lots of cotton and other light fabrics to stay cool. Since I travel a lot, everything has to be easy, versatile, and packable. While I keep my look really simple, light and easy, I also carry a little sack of jewelry – Sonya Boyajian being my favorite – to liven up my basics. I hardly wear any make-up – just mascara and some face oil.
What are some essential items for every summer wardrobe?
A classic black one-piece swimsuit. I think our Elmar suit is a great option and a favorite of many. Cotton lingerie and a silk slip for around the house. Fun dresses – Isa Arfen does this really well. A great pair of sandals – I love my Marni Fussbett sandals. You can wear them with everything.
How do your travels inspire your designs? Are there any destinations that have a special meaning or influence in your work?
As a designer I feel like the colors of places are what most influence me. The mountains and valleys in Colorado, the potash salt lakes in Utah, and the color of the architectural landscapes in Lake Como are a few things that come to mind.
What’s your most memorable or favorite vacation you’ve ever taken?
Salvador in Bahia Brazil.
If you could take a vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I would love to travel all over Mexico but Mexico City and Oaxaca are specifically on my list. I feel like Mexican culture is so rich in every way – historically, crafting traditions, art, architecture, and food. I love the people’s embrace of color and how they use it in everything they create. It’s fully embedded in their lives.
