Jayne Harkness started her career at Barneys New York 25 years ago. Since then, she has explored and discovered many emerging designers and brought them to the attention of the fashion community. For Harkness, it does not stop there. In 2014, she started the first luxury fashion fitness wear specialty store Bandier and continues to be a key mentor to CFDA designers through our new NETWORK program. A lesson that Harkness will always keep with her is the importance of never burning bridges.
Define creativity:
No fear!!
If you were to write a book, what would the title be?
That’s a tough question. I’m not sure. Definitely something around history of fashion, social changes and demographics.
What was your first job working in the creative industry?
My first job in the industry was at Barneys New York founding the CO/OP.
What do you see changing the face of fashion in the next year?
I think luxury streetwear is going to change the face of the industry—real clothes for real people.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned throughout your career?
Never burn a bridge!!
What does a NETWORK business mentor mean to you?
Everything! Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to share and continue inventing.
