On a balmy Friday evening in Paris, as the guests formed a line waiting to enter the Church of the Star, a brand-sanctioned posse chanted “Obligatory,” the title of the AWGE by A$AP Rocky debut show.
Once Rihanna and the couple’s son arrived, guests were allowed to enter the neo-gothic venue featuring a ‘fresco’ projection for the occasion that depicted symbols of American justice such as a judges bench, the Statue of Liberty, a Supreme courthouse, the American flag as well as angels, the dollar bill, Jesus Christ, and figures wearing streetwear with slogans such as “Don’t Be Dumb.” A faux judge’s bench served as a deejay booth in the church’s altar and the runway was dotted with several metal detector props nodding, perhaps, to the rapper’s recent legal issues.
Cue the suits worn with bullet-proof vests, a simple double-breasted white suit tightly on a female model, and male models in various suiting accessorized with the legal-size paper and folders. On the streetwear front, there was plenty of layering and more – think parkers worn off- shoulder, skirt over trousers, baggy pants with bandanas hanging off them, and some looks graced with a deck of cards. The classic 40-in-a-brown-paper-bag was the accessory du jour.
Taking his runway bow, A$AP stopped to kiss his wife, then picked up his son and carried him off the runway. It was a sweet and innocent moment in an otherwise thought-provoking show.
