Imitation of Christ Spring-Summer 2021 Look 1

It’s been exactly 20 years since Tara Subkoff became the talk of New York fashion with her first show held at a funeral parlor. Those old enough, myself among them, remember the collective industry enthusiasm for the designer and her uber-cool posse of friends such as Chloe Sevigny, Natasha Lyonne, and Arden Wohl. Subkoff had impact.

Two decades on, she is back, this time riffing on California skateboard culture with a fresh eye. For Spring-Summer 2021, Subkoff cast a group of teenage skateboarders for a short film showing off their skills as they fall, get up, and, in a cool visual effect that read video game, cause little floral explosions around them. The clothes had an irreverent vibe, from a deconstructed varsity jacket shown with a patterned dress to an evening gown fit for the prom. They could have walked right off the “Euphoria” set.

In the collection statement, these girls are  described as brave, confident, stylish, fearless, and heroic – in other words, a lot like Subkoff herself.
