The bushfires that broke out in Australia last September are still raging across the continent – with little sign of slowing down. To date, 14.8 million acres of land have been burned; nearly 500 million animals have been killed; 1,500 homes destroyed, and over 20 people have died. Although hot and dry summer weather has been responsible for a fire season in Australia, rapid climate change has exacerbated the issue. High temperatures, a drought, and strong winds caused the devastating fires to persist for months, putting the country in a state of emergency.
Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison – with assistance from the United States, Canada, and New Zealand –deployed a large arsenal of firefighters, police, and military to aid with rescue, evacuation, and controlling the fires. However, with Australia only now entering its summer season, hotter temperatures are on the horizon, making the issue more dangerous than ever.
Social media has been flooded with support for the country, raising awareness and much-needed funds to fight back. Below, see how the fashion industry is supporting Australia – and find out how you can help fight the fires.
