Bond Hardware on Breaking New Ground at Art Basel Miami

January 9, 2020

Bond Hardware, the New York City-based jewelry, accessories and furniture label, is well known for its original, sharp, and sculptural silhouettes. Duo Dana Hurwitz and Mariah Pershadsingh, who are behind the brand, are fellows in the CFDA’s Elaine Gold Launch Pad program this year.

Their latest project, The I-Beam Collection, was presented during Art Basel in Miami, where the brand held pop-ups at NADA Art Fair and Faena Bazaar. “I-Beams are the most material efficient way to create shape that is structural and supportive,” says Hurwitz. They took this concept, made some modifications, and applied it to their jewelry, furniture and sculptures. Intuitive, functional, and efficient design such as this, combined with an industrial edge, is a through-line among Bond’s collections.

Sustainability is at the core of the brand’s mission, with all products made locally in New York City. The metals are nickel free, hypoallergenic, and carefully chosen to reduce environmental impact. The brand also has a Reclaim Program that allows customers to trade-in their older Bond Hardware jewelry pieces to be recycled and reused, and to receive a credit for a new product from the collection.

We caught up with Hurwitz and Pershadsingh to find out more about their furniture pieces, their latest collection, and what’s coming next.

What inspired you to add furniture into your brand? How do you see this expanding over time?

Dana’s designs have always been directly inspired by the massive industrial surroundings in NYC, and previously concepts have always been applied with practical needs and size restraints for wearability in jewelry. Expanding into furniture and sculpture categories has been a goal from the very beginning, and feels like the natural next step. We are now free to make pieces at statuesque scales, to broaden the vision of BOND Hardware.

Over time, we plan to continue playing with scale + introduce other materials, like glass, stone, crystal, etc.

Can you tell us a bit about the pieces that are currently on display in Miami?

At Faena Hotel, we’ve presented the Giant I-Beam Sculpture and the coinciding I-Beam Collection of jewelry made in solid, recycled silver and gold. Through February 2020, you’ll also be able to see resin + marble Cinder Block sculptures at Faena, and the mini Cinder Block Pendant in solid silver as well as several signature pieces, including the Nail Collection and Hitch Collections with specialty pieces covered in recycled or lab grown diamonds.

What role does sustainability play in your methods + materials for your furniture pieces?

The sculptures and home objects are made with the same recycled materials as our jewelry.  We use aerospace-grade, recycled 6061 mirror polished Aluminum, or 316L Stainless Steel, which is inherently recycled. All the marble that we use are remnants from commercial real estate projects, made locally in New York.

What’s up next for BOND Hardware?

Our immediate next step is to keep touring and finding excuses to show pieces in new places, in new ways. Larger pieces, new spaces, public art projects, collaborations, and new applications of our motifs – that’s some of what’s next on the list.
