Greg Lauren’s Banana Republic

December 6, 2016

“Artistic, destroyed elegance” are the words artist and designer Greg Lauren uses to summarize his new menswear collaboration with Banana Republic. The limited-edition capsule collection, now available at select Banana Republic stores, was motivated by Lauren’s desire to create an accessible line of core pieces that stay true to his ruggedly chic aesthetic.

To that end, Lauren added must-have staples like top coats, raw linen tuxedo shirts, and herringbone pants to the line. “I imagined a trip, a journey, where our guy packs one bag, throws it into the back of his pickup truck, or Jeep, goes rock climbing, surfs, writes a novel, or paints a picture, dances, and gets back in time to grab his rumpled tux and go to a black tie event,” he said.

The collection is produced entirely in Los Angeles by TEG International, which satisfies Lauren’s quest to manufacture the line locally and sustainably. “Because of the CFDA, we found a production company that was willing to make our crazy creation while [developing] a production element [with] an artisanal approach [and] integrity,” he explained.

Lauren’s ad campaign for the new collection drew inspiration from the creative community around him and includes chefs, an athlete, an actor, a film editor, songwriters, a personal trainer, a sound engineer, a videographer, and a music producer. Many were in attendance at the November 30 launch party in Los Angeles along with Lauren’s wife, actress Elizabeth Berkley, as well as several CFDA Members like Adam and Ryan Goldston from APL and milliner Nick Fouquet.

Lauren tips his hat to “artists and creative people who make art in any medium which changes the way we think about the world around us.” He added, “It’s not easy and takes courage to do so.”
