CFDA’s Elaine Gold Launch Pad fellow, Graham Baldwin of Graham Tyler debuted his collection, All The Stars Are A Riot Of Flowers, at George Billis Gallery earlier this month.

Baldwin grew up painting with a love for black and white, and soon moved into other art forms –ie. studying sculpture and taking on a millinery apprenticeship. Attention to detail and precision is Baldwin’s trade.

Given Baldwin’s fine arts background, the decision to debut his collection at a Chelsea art gallery felt fitting. Some pieces were framed on the wall, others like one of Baldwin’s signature hats, sat on display on a plinth. Artwork labels. with a title of the piece, and a quote, “A selection of objects for those who dream of their childhood in shades of grey,” accompanied the clothes hanging on the white walls.

“I really want to drive the narratives in my collection.  I want people to feel like they are buying art pieces when they are buying my clothes, so this is the best way I’ve found to approach it,” said Baldwin.

The collection was inspired by a film called “Jack’s Dream.” Its artist and filmmaker, Joseph Cornell, was active during the 1930s-1970s. Baldwin recreated three key images from the film throughout the collection: a sinking ship, a sun setting, and a castle. These images were painted on bags, button-ups, alluded to through design, or hand-painted by Baldwin and hung throughout the gallery.

“These images are kind of reminiscent of childhood, and I used them as a starting point for the collection,” Baldwin added.
