This Friday, the winners of the CFDA + Lexus Fashion* Initiative Micro Award Challenge will be unveiled. As part of the challenge, the designers were asked to pitch tangible resources and key ideas that would turn their sustainability goals into action – with a focus on positive impact, viability, overall clarity and vision. Here, a sneak peek into each brand’s goals and inspirations for the challenge submission:
Brother Vellies: The amazing opportunity to radically change our community in Ethiopia through increased employment opportunities.
Dezso by Sara Beltran: To continue producing exclusively hand-made products and to continue working with artisans and indigenous communities
Erin Snow: Imagine animal-free, recyclable, non-toxic coats warm enough for a polar vortex and smart enough to regulate your temperature on a mild day. That’s what we’re working on.
K/LLER Collection: To build long-term, sustainable growth opportunities by supporting ethical manufacturers and community-based initiatives. We created an ankole horn and recycled gold collection to be 100 percent responsible, with a triple beneficial impact that is environmental, social, and financial.
Nicholas K: Nature’s solutions to modern luxury.
Prabal Gurung: Nepal is, and always will be a strong inspiration and with this challenge our goal is to turn Nepal into a sustainable production and development center that can raise the country’s profile and can serve as an example for other developing countries globally.
SVILU: Bottle to Skirt: The Journey from Landfill to Garment
Tome: The message of Tome Pure will be responsibility at every step— we believe that every single decision in the design process counts, from choosing sustainable fabrics to production choices.
WWAKE: Our Micro Awards challenge was inspired by the poetry that resonates from our materials.
Zero + Maria Cornejo: We believe in fashion with a conscience. Change and evolution takes time and it’s something we have to do from within our organization in order to really make a change. We are gradually moving the company as a whole in this direction, taking those little steps so we can guarantee a better future.
