What do Rosaliá, Hailey Bieber, and Kylie Jenner have in common? Other than being some of the most famous women in the world, they all count themselves fans of Sami Mirò. With this kind of support, it’s no surprise Mirò has become one of the most buzzworthy brands in the business.
In just a few years, Mirò went from creating one-of vintage looks to building an established business with unique re-worked pieces that pretty much never fail to go viral. From her asymmetric, open-seam ribbed tees to her signature safety-pinned shirts, the designer has found success in her signature style.
Now counting Revolve and FWRD as retailers, and collaborating with Heron Preston during Paris Fashion Week, the San Francisco native is on her way to the top.
We caught up with the CFDA Interim Member to hear more about her journey in fashion.
What does it mean to you to be an Interim CFDA member?
Being a CFDA member is the most unexpected honor of my career thus far. My vision and creativity as a designer obtaining recognition by the fashion community is incredibly encouraging, particularly because my unusual journey has forever led with both ideation and eco-consciousness simultaneously. As a new CFDA member, I feel that my path as a designer is just commencing which is wildly inspiring as I enter this new threshold.
What is one thing you are looking for help with in terms of running your business?
I would love to have a mentorship program for emerging designers/ interim members (anyone who is interested). It could be something as easy as having those who are interested in having mentors make a 1-5 minute video of who they are and what they are looking for in a mentor. The videos are then sent to those who are interested in being mentors and they can select the designers they want to build a relationship with for a zoom “speed date.” Then the mentees can select their top three mentors and matches are made!
Or, a grant opportunity for designers who are running their businesses sustainably to show gratitude to those who have been caring about the planet before it was a trend.
What is one career-defining or ‘pinch me’ moment you’ve had so far?
I am lucky to have had several! Designing Selena Gomez’s Revival Tour in Asia in my first month of launching my brand by creating over 30 looks for her… it was the first time a global tour showed new looks each night versus wearing the same 5 looks each show for the duration of a year. Designing my first couture gown and only having five days to do so from point a (design ideation) to point z (waking down the carpet with my muse wearing my gown). Designing over 30 styles for a Paris Fashion Week runway collaboration with Heron Preston.
How would you describe your label to someone not familiar with the brand?
