Mexican mariachi has always been a showcase of high fashion and art; Majo Aguilar is creating her own voice within it.
She’s bridging the worlds of traditional mariachi and contemporary music with bold, expressive fashion to match. Whether she’s experimenting with genre boundaries, writing her own story within regional Mexican music, or hitting the stage with radiant charro-inspired ensembles, she’s redefining cultural identity through artistry and style.
CFDA tagged along during one of her visits in New York City, where she chose to wear her personal favorite CFDA member Tory Burch for a look around town and rehearsals before a performance.
Can you describe your approach to fashion and how you pick which designers or brands you wear?
I remember when I was very young, my approach to fashion was very playful, and it’s still the way I do it now. For me, fashion is showing the world what’s inside you—your colors and what you feel comfortable in.
I try and look for brands, clothes or shoes that are different, colorful and playful. The main factor that helps me pick is that they have to be different and inspire me. I love many brands; Tory Burch is one, as well as Patricio Campillo who shows during NYFW.
How does fashion play a part in your work and artistic expression?
Fashion plays a very important part in my work and in my artistic expression. My shows are super fun because I play with mariachi, and I co-designed this custom approach with a traditional Mexican suit designer Javier Morales.
We did these custom suits that are not very traditional at all, but they have the buttons and other elements that are very traditional of the mariachi suit. Instead of using a skirt I use pants, and instead of using warm or dark colors I make them in purple, green, baby blue, orange, red, and vibrant colors. For me, it’s about being playful and enjoying what I am wearing, so fashion plays a very important role in my artistic expression.
What excites you about the American fashion and wearing this Tory Burch look?
There are so many talented designers, but I love this Tory Burch look because I feel free in it. Sexy, but also sweet. It’s a very cool mix and in this beautiful red color—you know everyone loves a pretty red dress. I feel like I almost float in it.
What exciting things or news can we look forward to in the Majo Aguilar universe?
I’m releasing a deluxe version of my album Mariachi Mio with many interesting songs I wrote. It’s a very personal album and that I’m going to keep performing in the U.S. and México. I am going to do my very first show in Colombia this year in December, so I’m very excited and I’m very happy in this time of my project and my life.
