Madison Avenue just gained another American designer storefront. Native New Yorker Ulla Johnson opened the doors of her second New York City store in mid-September, making her own mark on the historic shopping avenue.
The CFDA member, who has made a practice of collaborating with women artists and local designers, is keeping things close to home. She grew up nearby on the Upper East Side, and the over 2,000 square foot boutique between 70th and 71st street has a residential feel.
Designed in collaboration with Studio Valle del Valle, the space holds pieces from Johnson’s personal collection such as a bronze sculpture by Alma Allen and a vintage Fratelli Marelli mirror, shown with among hand-painted trompe l’oeil portals, custom furnishings and a Fortuny suspended ivory silk lamp.
“I am committed to having each new boutique speak in an intimate dialogue with its environment and always strive to work with local designers and makers in celebrating the mood and craft of its locale,” said Johnson. “Our world is not just about the clothes themselves but about the story, the process, the travel, the lifestyle, the heart – our retail environments are a reflection of this, each unique and residential in feeling with a very personal sensibility throughout.”
Congrats, Ulla!
