Deborah Lloyd knew she wanted to pursue a career in fashion design ever since she was young. Kate Spade’s President and Chief Creative Officer credits Rose Marie Bravo, another fearless fashion female and former chief at Burberry, for giving her confidence to break down barriers. We caught up with Lloyd to learn how she was able to follow her dreams.
Did you always know that you wanted to work in the Fashion Industry?
I knew for certain when I was 15 years old. The light bulb went on at school. A visiting lector was talking about careers in the arts and mentioned fashion design. I remember standing up and saying, “That’s what I would like to do and how do I do it.” Ever since, that has been my focus.
What words of wisdom did a significant female figure share with you in your life?
“Do what you love” – this has been my motto ever since I first heard it. It makes total sense. We spend so much of our time and energy working. I couldn’t imagine not loving what I do.
What in your life has brought or given you the greatest satisfaction or fulfillment?
Building kate spade new york into a global lifestyle brand has been my passion. I get to do what I love every day. I work with an incredible team. I have the best job in the world.
Women’s roles in society have changed dramatically over the past several decades. How have these changes had a personal impact on you?
I have seen such change in the fashion industry. I remember when Rose Marie Bravo first started at Burberry, the way she broke down barriers and showed a generation of us how to break through the glass ceiling. Those British guys didn’t know what hit them. She gave me confidence to be myself and believe anything is possible.
What future goals do you have for yourself?
To find balance. It would be good to spend a little time enjoying the journey rather than racing to the finish line every time. I would like a little time to stop and smell the roses!
