Fashion for ACLU Spotlight: Gabriela Hearst

September 11, 2017

Marc Karimzadeh

Gabriela Hearst may originally be a native of Uruguay, but she has lived in the U.S. long enough to develop a passion for our people and politics. So when it came time to support our Fashion for ACLU campaign, she jumped at the chance. We caught up with the designer on why this project is so close to her heart.

Why is it so important to you to participate in Fashion for ACLU?

I believe that now more than ever, we need an organization like ACLU to defend those under attack. The very thread of this country – our immigrants – is being targeted. I am proud that the fashion community is always first and fierce in messaging the hard topics. We are never afraid to speak out and help.

What personal message do you hope to convey by taking part in the initiative?

We have to help defend those who can’t defend themselves. We can’t let our immigrants go into the shadows. Children and parents are scared of their futures after having been law-abiding members of our community. Let’s also call it for what it is: it is not white immigrants that they’re after.

How do you plan to use/wear the ribbon?

Over my heart and through the day of my show – all the attention I get that day will be shared with ACLU!
