Fake News, Uggs, and a Seventies Comeback

February 12, 2019

Inspiration can come from anywhere, as the New York Fashion Week collections proved. From Kate Spade New York’s nod to the 70s to  Jeremy Scott’s commentary on tabloid news, take a look at the best behind-the-scenes moments captured by photographer Kathryn Page.

The Eckhaus Latta label is so hot that each Saturday of New York Fashion Week, we all trek to a nondescript industrial area somewhere between East Williamsburg and Bushwick to see the show (even when the L is not running, and true New Yorkers know how big a deal this is). This season, Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta delivered another hit – led by the “It” shoe collaboration with Ugg and their chic crop tops that added new allure to wooden beading more typically reserved for vintage car seat covers.

Jeremy Scott

Jeremy Scott surprised us all when he shelved his trademark bursts of color in favor of a collection of all black-and-white looks. The lineup was inspired by the rise of a fast-paced news media cycle dominated by clickbait articles, salacious stories, and, yes, fake news. Designed in collaboration with artist Aleksandra Mir, the bold graphics and slogans ripped from the headlines of daily tabloids on every look generated headlines on their own.

A recent LA transplant, Jonathan Simkhai brought the ease of the West Coast into his collection. Long silk tops and delicate lace dresses looked effortless on models. The designer even gave the most strictly tailored suits an ultra-feminine touch by incorporating lingerie into the look.

Creative Director Nicola Glass brought the Seventies back into style with her latest Kate Spade New York collection featuring brightly-colored turbans, velvet pantsuits, and wavy hair (whether intended or not, we saw a little Loulou de la Falaise here). The collection featured wearable ready-to-wear and, of course, great accessories – multiple cross bodies, totes, and clutches among them.
