Creative magic can happen at CFDA Member events. Just ask Rosie Assoulin and Jeff Press, the designer behind luxury eyewear brand Morgenthal Frederics. Both were inducted into the CFDA in 2015, and found themselves sitting next to each other at the New Members’ Orientation. They immediately hit it off and the rest is fashion friends history.

“He and I volley references and films and obscure things all the time, and I’ve yet to stump him!” Assoulin said.

“It turned out that we had both long admired each other’s work,” Press said.

The meeting of minds led to two Rosie Assoulin X Morgenthal Frederics styles in six different. The designs, which retail for $495, are named Demolition Man, featuring a small Crown-Panto and geometric bridge, and On the Boardwalk, which is an oversized octagon frame. Materials such as pure titanium and acetate were used for both designs.

The pieces made their debut during Assoulin’s Fall 2016 presentation last month.

“Rosie has an affinity for vintage frames, and with our longstanding heritage in eyewear, I was able to narrow in quickly on what would be compelling to both of our customers,” explained Press, calling these designs “at once modern, timeless and beautiful.”

Assoulin, for her part, loves eyewear and the multitude of purposes it serves.

“It is such a strong communicator of an attitude, a time, an energy,” she said. “And if I’m honest, I’ll admit that it always makes me feel a little bit cooler!”
