Babi and Sachin Ahluwalia tied the knot the morning of December 25, 1996. The Sikh ceremony took place at a family friend’s farmhouse in New Delhi. We asked the designer about her special day, her favorite memories, and the advice she has for young brides.
Describe your wedding gown and why you chose this particular design.
I wore a traditional Indian tan-color churidar (which is more like a fitted trouser) with full-circle kurta with a beautiful gold bullion embroidered tulle dupatta (long scarf). I wore it as my sister Ranna Gill, who is a designer in India, made it for me. It is traditional attire for Sikh weddings.
What is your favorite memory of your wedding?
When the wedding planners misspelled my name as Babe – in lights! – at the sangeet decorations the night before. It said SACHIN weds BABE at the entrance. My cousins, girlfriends and I had such a laugh about it!
What is the main piece of advice you have for brides?
Love is an emotion and there are days when it may be stronger than others, but if you approach your marriage as a commitment, you can make it through all kinds of weather and try to be your partner’s biggest supporter, not their critic.
