Edie Parker and Laverne Cox Team Up to Support the LGBTQ+ Community

When Laverne Cox made her way down the 2019 Emmy Awards red carpet, it wasn’t just her voluminous tiered tulle gown that stole the spotlight – it was also her small accessory that made headlines. The small rainbow acrylic clutch, which featured the transgender community’s flag on one side and the LGBTQ rainbow on the other, reading ‘Oct 8, Title VII, Supreme Court,’ made a big statement.

This date serves as a powerful reminder to Americans of the day when the Supreme Court debated whether LGBTQ+ workers should be protected by Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, a law that “prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin.” Cox, an activist and leading voice in the community, used her platform to raise awareness around the issue – and proved fashion is political.

Last week, the Supreme Court rules that civil rights laws should need protect gay and transgender workers from workplace discrimination – a historic ruling for the community. In honor of the historic ruling, and just in time for Pride Month, it seems like the perfect time to bring new life to the bag that drew headlines this time last year.

Edie Parker Clutch

Created by CFDA member Brett Heyman, the custom Edie Parker clutch will be up for auction to today on CharityBuzz, with proceeds going to the Anti-Violence Project, a nonprofit that works to keep LGBTQ+ communities safe and supports survivors of abuse through counseling and advocacy.

“We wanted to bring further attention to L.G.B.T.Q. issues during pride month, and Laverne was immediately willing to lend her clutch to the cause. The fact that the Supreme Court made their momentous decision protecting L.G.B.T.Q. rights against workplace discrimination last week makes this timing even better. Hopefully there will never be a need for another bag of its kind ever again,” said Heyman.

“Laverne is a superwoman,” she added. “She is a talented actress, activist and trailblazer. We are proud to be even a tiny part of her work for gender equality.”
