With a deep commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability, and inclusivity, Dwarmis Concepción creates silhouettes that feel both timeless and contemporary.
This September, the designer joins the Official New York Fashion Week Schedule for the first time, bringing her distinctive fusion of Caribbean heritage and American ideals to fashion’s biggest stage.
With experience at CFDA member brands such as Tory Burch, Ulla Johnson, and Rachel Comey under her belt, Concepción built her brand, Dwarmis, with distinct vision that is all her own. Rooted in the easy-breezy elegance of her Dominican Republic upbringing and refined by the fast-paced, on-the-go energy of New York City, the work embodies a modern harmony between these two worlds.
Step inside the world of Dwarmis as she opens up about her roots, inspirations, and the vision behind her brand.
Where are you from? How is your hometown or background woven into your designs?
I was born and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and my roots deeply influence my designs. I grew up surrounded by a vibrant culture, music, and craftsmanship, wrapped in rich colors, textures, and the artistry that defines my heritage.
My father used to import fabrics and collected art exclusively from Dominican artists. My aunt was the founder of the first all-women Latin American merengue band. Fabrics, paintings, sculptures, and music filled our home. When I design, I focus on the materials, playing with silhouettes, shapes, and the flow of fabric as it moves and reacts to the body, whether walking, dancing, or running.
Living in New York City has had a profound impact on my designs. The diverse cultures I see every day in this city add an exciting twist to every collection. The fusion of Dominican warmth and American ideals defines my approach to fashion, emphasizing versatility, craftsmanship, and inclusivity.
In the beginning stages of creating a collection, where do you search for inspiration?
For me, inspiration comes from the world around me and the simplicity of everyday life, such as the uniqueness of a particular teacup and how its colors are reflected by the light. I also draw inspiration from the personal style of people I observe daily in New York City.
Music and dance ignite my creativity. I often reflect on personal and family experiences, especially from both my grandmothers, whose lives deeply shaped my perspective. All of this has inspired my latest spring collection.
What was your first experience with NYFW and how has that shaped you as a designer?
My first experience with NYFW was backstage at Tory Burch. The energy and excitement were electrifying. Witnessing the dedication and hard work behind the scenes had a profound impact on me. The team’s passion fueled my desire to one day have my own voice within this incredible space.
This experience taught me the importance of creativity, meticulousness, and teamwork, and how they are essential to bringing a collection to life. It reinforced my commitment to perfecting every detail in my own work.
If you had to use one of your own pieces for the rest of your life, which would it be and why?
I would choose the timeless, well-constructed Georgia dress. It’s versatile enough to transition from day to night, offering both comfort and elegance. It is a piece you can dress up or down, feeling fabulous at every moment. Paired with sandals or boots, it works for all seasons, at the beach, or even at a wedding.
The way it moves when you walk is truly a statement. The number of compliments I receive when wearing it is endless. This piece embodies the essence of my brand: functional, beautiful, full of presence, and made to last.
