American Glamour. For nearly three decades, Mark Badgley and James Mischka have worked this idea with collections that veer evening and provide memorable moments on — and off — the red carpet.

Such moments are at the core of “American Glamour: Badgley Mischka.” Published by Rizzoli New York with a foreword from André Leon Talley as well as an essay by Hal Rubenstein and an introduction by Dennita Sewell, the book is a testimony to the way Badgley Mischka embodies glamour — from Forties shapes to beading and fairytale finishes from cocktail dresses to fishtail gowns. In this tome, the sentiment is captured beautifully by photographers such as Ruven Afanador, Ellen von Unwerth and Walter Chin.

“This book has been in work for almost 30 years now, and especially intensive for the last three years,” Mischka told CFDA.com. “When Badgley Mischka turned 25, we wanted to present our view of what fashion should be and how women can be celebrated.”

And there is an abundance of celebration. Over the years, there were many Badgley Mischka red carpet moments from Sharon Stone to Kate Winslet, Jennifer Garner and Taylor Swift. A favorite? “There have been a lot,” Badgley said, “but our earliest one was Winona Ryder at the 1996 Oscars in our blush lace gown.  Still looks fab.”

Badgley and Mischka first met at Parsons School of Design, and, after each apprenticed for fashion houses, the two teamed up and launched Badgley Mischka in 1988.  Looking back, the duo has remained true to its core.

“Fashion has gone through so many changes during our careers, but we really have not wavered from our desire to make our customers feel wonderful and look fantastic,” Badgley said. “We never wanted to be everything to everybody, but just wanted to be what we believe in.”

Added Mischka: “In going through the archives, we realized that what we do really can have an impact on people. Fashion can be so arbitrary and capricious, but adding a little bit of beauty to the world is a very good thing.” It is indeed.
