That Isaac Mizrahi is not just one of the great designers but also a bona fide entertainer has long been accepted as fact. Those in doubt should just go to iTunes and download Unzipped, which, 22 years later, still stands as one of the best fashion documentaries ever.
On Tuesday evening, Mizrahi added to his repertoire quite literally when he made his debut at Café Carlyle. The CFDA Member didn’t disappoint. He called the show Does This Song Make Me Look Fat?, and personal weight was just one of the amusing topics the designer riffed on in-between a set list that included classics like Lotus Blossom, Baubles, Bangles and Beads, and, in a timely tribute to Mary Tyler Moore, You’re Gonna Make it After All.
Mizrahi touched on sleeplessness and medications, recalling how he once, while on Ambien, emailed Anna Wintour in the middle of the night suggesting she should publish two September issues with uber-publicist Peggy Siegal in copy. “I got a response from her right away. I guess she wasn’t sleeping that night. It was five characters: ‘R U OK?’”
He also poked a little fun at stereotypes of his own Jewish culture, especially the way in which questions are answered with questions, sometimes in a tone that veers borderline kvetchy. When his husband Arnold Germer surprised him with a Gardenia, his knee-jerk response was: “You know they always die?” His mother had the exact same reaction when she came for a visit.
A favorite moment, though, was his recollection of Faye Dunaway’s visit to his studio while he was working on Unzipped. “When she liked something, she’d look at herself in the mirror and talk about herself in the third person,” Mizrahi recalled, “and say, ‘Oh, that’s very Faye.’ So very Faye.” When it came time to get her to sign the release form for the film, she was all-movie star. “So I bring this book to her — and I swear I told her what it was — but somehow she mistook it for an autograph book or something,” he said. “She signed it: ‘To Isaac, Loved today. Love the clothes. — Miss Faye Dunaway.”
