“This is the Super Bowl for people who don’t watch the Super Bowl,” James Corden mused at Wednesday’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Fashion Show at the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood.
Corden served at this year’s host for the occasion, which was set poolside for the first time — apt for the unseasonably warm LA temps. Despite the heat, the fully-staged show—a relative rarity in Los Angeles—drew a mix of designers, film and screen stars who added to annual event’s sense of cool. Picture the scene: Tom Ford chatted with Billie Lourd; Anna Wintour caught up with Corden, and Selma Blair introduced herself to Millie Bobby Brown. New supermodel Kaia Gerber arrived with model brother Presley; Tracee Ellis Ross spoke to Hamilton costars Daveed Diggs and Leslie Odom, Jr., and Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy sat nearby and took it all in while waiters passed around flutes of Perrier-Jouët Belle Eqoque.
The show was cool mix of each talent’s best, blending models and looks seamlessly from brand to brand. Dyne’s robotic models opened the show with technical designs, and Chromat’s models were decked in architectural swimwear replete with swim caps and pool floats. Jordan Askill’s jewelry found its home on nymph-like creatures who set doves free, and Victor Glemaud’s looks were styled on models who walked on stilts. Ahlem staged a paparazzi scene to spotlight the sunglasses, and Mateo New York turned looks into works of art via models holding a frame to spotlight designs. Sandy Liang, Telfar LLC, Vaquera and RTA equally impressed with their imagination.
It was an inventive spectacle that gave each brand the room to tell their story in full.
“To be able to support these young designers’ vision coming to life is an amazing thing,” remarked Deborah Lloyd, Chief Creative Officer of kate spade new york, which presented the show. “A support system like the CFDA allows them to put on a show like this in front of Young Hollywood.”
After the coast-to-coast course, the end is near for the designers, as LA marked the last stop in the program before the winner and two runners-up are announced on November 6 in New York.
