Diane von Fustenberg, CFDA Chairwoman and one of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion fund judges, has said it many, many times: “Fashion is a family.” The concept of a tight-knit community, a network of peers that you can learn from, rely on, and turn to is certainly core to CFDA’s philosophy, which makes CVFF’s Instagram challenge this year all the more delightful. It prompted the 10 finalists to create an image that represents their interpretation of a “fashion family portrait.”
Instagram Head of Fashion Partnerships Eva Chen revealed the challenge to the designers in New York last week, and right after the big reveal, we asked each designer about their immediate thoughts on “fashion family.” Becca McCharen-Tran of Chromat said, “I think it’s beautiful. I’ve been wanting to celebrate all those people whose blood, sweat, and tears go into what we make.”
The idea of finding a way to highlight a core group of people was echoed by Jordan Askill who said he immediately though, “How can I bring everyone who is precious to me together?”
Christopher Bevans of DYNE said his wife and daughter were the first thing he thought of when he learned of the Fashion Family theme. “They’ve been on my crazy train the whole time, supporting me and the business.”
Sandy Liang couldn’t pick just one association, instead she said she thought of “My grandma, and my team, and my neighborhood! I guess that’s three things.”
The challenge was definitely a personal one that challenged designers to consider the people who make their work possible. Flip through the above gallery to see the final results!
