NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

Culture, Love, and Art Serve as Inspiration during NYFW

February 13, 2019

Romance was alive and well at New York Fashion Week. Phillip Lim stayed true to his mantra of ‘Romancing Reality’ by finding beauty in building his collection around the everyday woman’s wardrobe, while love was the core of recently appointed CFDA Member Sander Lak’s dreamy runway show. Take a look at some of the NYFW highlights through the lens of photographer Kathryn Page.

It’s only been a year since he took over as Creative Director, but Wes Gordon already feels right at home at Carolina Herrera. For Fall-Winter 2019, which he showed at the New York Historical Society, the designer presented a sweet collection Society that nodded to the house’s past while forging a path to its future. The silhouettes were voluminous and the colors were loud, but in Gordon’s hands, the look felt effortless. Even an over sized bright orange gown and an one-shoulder cobalt blue floor-length shirt were casual.

Consider it the final chapter in the Sies Marjan trilogy.  Where Fall 2019 was inspired by loss and Spring  2019 centered around family, this collection was all about love. Models walked down a shimmering Swarovski crystal-covered runway in iridescent ruffled gowns, brightly-colored sequined dresses, and deconstructed, off-the-shoulder coats. Sander Lak delivered one of the most magical collections of the week.

Phillip Lim’s collection was rooted in practicality and ease, from sharp black trench coats and fleece outerwear in classic styles –updated just enough to give for fashion flair. The designer embraced a neutral color palette with touches of hunter green and animal prints for extra dash. Lim has decided to nix fur and exotic skins, resulting in a smart, no-nonsense collection perfect for fall wardrobes.

A long, tailored charcoal gray wool coat opened the Tory Burch show, setting the tone for the collection.   Burch contrasted muted outerwear with high-collared ruffled dresses in floral patterns- adding an eccentric vibe to the look. The presentation was inspired by Black Mountain College, which contributed to trajectory of modern art in America, and her love of Rauschenberg, de Kooning, and other art icons Burch studied at school.

What does it mean to be “a citizen of our world, to forge our own identity, to remain rooted and foster a community?” Prabal Gurung pondered this for Fall-Winter 2019, and responded with an explosion of color and culture down the runway. Ashley Graham and Bella Hadid were among the models – as was a smattering of men, including Alton Mason, as Gurung expands his menswear offerings.
