Over the past half century, Annie Leibovitz has firmly secured her status as one of America’s – and, really,  the world’s – most foremost portrait photographers. Her oeuvre includes iconic covers for Rolling Stones magazine, Vanity Fair, and Vogue, which have powerfully contributed to America’s cultural narrative.

Next month, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkanas will bring an installation of Leibovitz’s work to America’s Heartland. “Annie Leibovitz at Work,” from Sept.16, 2023-Jan. 29, 2024, features a mix of new and rarely-seen recent photographs and some iconic images. With a mix of prints on paper and digital displays, these include portraits of former CFDA Chairman Tom Ford, Presidents Obama and Biden, Rihanna, Dolly Parton, Cindy Sherman, LeBron James, Shonda Rhimes, and Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

“We’re honored to showcase the exceptional work of Annie Leibovitz, an artist with an extraordinary vision and legacy,” said Olivia Walton, board chair for Crystal Bridges. “Annie’s photographs capture our nation’s diverse culture, history, and people, while serving as a powerful reflection of the American experience. As a museum situated in the Heartland of America, we are dedicated to presenting work that fosters a deeper sense of identity and connection for visitors in this region – and across the country.”

Alejo Benedetti, acting curator of contemporary art at Crystal Bridges, added: “Annie Leibovitz at Work is a bold re-examining of the artist’s practice. This is Annie criss-crossing her legendary career in a deeply personal and self-reflective way in order to give a peek into her mind at work. The result is a tour de force filled to the brim with an intimacy and clarity of vision that could only come from Annie herself.”

In conjunction with the exhibition, Crystal Bridges will host The Party on Sept. 14, which raises funds for the museum’s art education programs.

After its Bentonville run, the exhibition will, after its Bentonville run, travel to The Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, CA, the Frist Art Museum in Nashville, TN, and, for its finale, the Wichita Art Museum in Wichita, KS.

As Leibovitz herself put it, “This was an opportunity to do something that I couldn’t do for anyone else.”
