Zac Posen finds it hard to pick just one cause to support and because of that, he chooses to spread his love to a myriad of organizations ranging from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to City Harvest. As a chairman of the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, he strives to incorporate philanthropic work into his life just as Elizabeth Taylor did herself. We caught up with Posen to find out how giving back has made an impact not only on his life but also on his career as a designer.
What role do you think the fashion industry plays in responding to global issues?
One of the wonderful things about the fashion industry is that it provides a public platform to speak on issues that matter most. I feel very lucky to have a strong following that I am able to use to shed light on causes that are important. This will hopefully inspire others to donate their time, energy, and money to these causes.
How important is it for you to incorporate giving back into your business/brand?
Giving back has always been an extremely important part of my business. I always made it a priority to mentor students, and donate my time to causes I believed in. When I started my company I focused on arts and education. Currently, I am very lucky to be able to donate, personally and professionally, to a myriad of organizations I am passionate about, including but not limited to: St. Jude’s which was introduced to me by Brooks Brothers, City Harvest and Dress for Success.
Which causes or charities are you most passionate about?
I am very vocal in my support of Planned Parenthood and LGBTQIA rights, but the causes and charities that I support extend far beyond these initiatives. Between September and October this year, my company will have done a fashion show, the Neiman Marcus Crystal Charity Ball, which supports various children’s charities in Dallas County, as well as an event with the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, in which 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to helping people affected by HIV/AIDS.
Who or what has inspired you to give back?
I feel extremely honored to be a chairman of the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, not only because it is in support of such an important cause, but also because Elizabeth Taylor is someone whom I have always looked up to for her vast philanthropic involvement throughout her life. Additionally, my mother and sister are very avid advocates and allies within the New York City community, and I am greatly inspired by their powerful voices.
What is your most memorable philanthropic experience?
There are so many it is truly impossible to pick the most memorable. Some of my fondest philanthropic memories were getting to spend time and be hands on and active in making a difference to causes and people in need.
