When it comes to image-making, few rival Grace Coddington in imagination and impact.
The Clio Awards will recognize Coddington’s oeuvre, which spans over five decades, with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Clio Fashion & Beauty next month. Clio is a strategic partner of the CFDA.
“Grace Coddington’s hard work, dedication and imagination within her career has made her name synonymous with fashion,” said Clio President Nicole Purcell. “When selecting our Lifetime Achievement recipients each year, our goal is always to acknowledge someone who has devoted their life to furthering the creative advancement of this industry.”
And that she has done – in spades. From her years as a model in Swinging Sixties London to her work as a fashion editor – first at British Vogue and later as creative director of American Vogue – Coddington has worked with all the great photographers, from David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin to Bruce Weber, Steven Meisel, Peter Lindbergh, Patrick Demarchelier, and Steven Klein.
The shoots are as iconic as her mane of red hair. You will have noticed it in the front rows of fashion shows in New York, Paris, or Milan—or in that memorable Limelight Nights story in British Vogue in 2013, shot by Helmut Newton and featuring Grace, in sunglasses and coolly peeking out of the pool. The image speaks volumes about that moment in fashion.
The CFDA honored Grace Coddington with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.
More recently, Coddington’s profile was boosted when she became the breakout star in the acclaimed 2009 documentary called The September Issue. She is known to love fashion as much as she does cats. In fact, in 2006, she published a book of feline illustrations called The Catwalk Cats. It complimented 2002’s Grace:Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue, and has joined other books Grace: A Memoir (2012) and Grace: The American Vogue Years (2016) on many fashionable bookshelves.
Last year, Coddington’s role at American Vogue evolved to Creative Director at Large, and she began to collaborate with Tiffany & Co. as well as Comme des Garcons, the latter for a fragrance called Grace by Grace Coddington.
“After working in fashion for more than half a century, with no sign of stopping, Grace couldn’t be more deserving of this honor,” Clio’s Purcell added.
The 58th annual Clio Awards will take place at The Tent at Lincoln Center on Sept. 27.
