For Monday’s 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards, Aquafil created a beautiful carpet that reflected the overall creative of the night. It was not only pink, but also green, as in sustainable – that’s because it was made with ECONYL® regenerated nylon!

But that wasn’t the only sustainable element of the night. Brooklyn-based fashion designer Christopher John Rogers, one of the most promising names in American fashion, designed a dress made from said ECONYL® regenerated nylon for model Ayesha Sesay, who serves as the evening’s Twova hostess and handed out the statuettes throughout the evening.

“Upon receiving the ECONYL textile for the CFDA’s Trova hostess dress, I was intrigued with its high degree of stretch and its ability to be manipulated in ways that I haven’t really explored with fabric before,” Rogers explained. “Also due to the dark color of the fabric, I really wanted to employ as many textures as possible. We utilized ruching, created exaggerated ruffles by basting the fabric to a stiff netting, and also gathered the fabric horizontally to create a skirt that emphasized the fluid qualities of the textile.

ECONYL® nylon is made from waste such as fishing nets that has been recovered from the ocean and spent carpets that would end up in landfills. The new nylon can be recycled, recreated and remolded without ever losing its quality. The effect: an up to 80 percent reduction in the global warming impact of nylon in comparison to material made from oil.

And the resulting dress looked absolutely gorgeous!

“The goal,” Rogers said, “was to create a dynamic silhouette for stage while highlighting the various characteristics and possibilities using this sustainable fabric.”
