Checking in with Gucci Changemakers x CFDA Scholar by Design Award Winner Ajai Kasim

June 15, 2020

Kevin Bass

From a very early age Ajai Kasim has shown signs of creativity with his drawing and art making skills. Kasim was raised by his mother in an impoverished area in West Oakland, CA, and wanting a better life for her son, Kasim’s mother put him in an African-Centered school which allowed him to build up his self-esteem, understand the value of the village, and take pride in his African roots. As his mother drove him to and from school, she would point out the misfortunes of their community. Inspired by the men of his community – and as a study on black male vulnerability – Ajai later reimagined white tees, baggy pants, puffer coats, and dreadlocks for his first fashion show titled: Over Pink.

An Oakland creative of many forms, Kasim will be leaving Oakland to study at Parsons School of Design in New York with a reputation of being one of the most sought-after young performers for the Bay Area’s summer music festivals including: Latham Square; 2018 Oakland’s Lakefest, 2017 Oaktoberfest, and Oakhella’s 2019 season closing festival.  Additionally, Kasim has opened for artists like Saweetie and Marteen.

Just like a soundtrack to a film, fashion is the soundtrack to Kasim’s life. Kasim wants to become a designer who orchestrates the soundtrack for people finding their own identity and create a lifestyle brand that pushes the wearer to be confident.

Kasim has always had the vision and the drive to accomplish his goals.  Through his efforts he’s earned the honor to travel to Singapore, Thailand, and Ghana, West Africa, where he learned the true meaning of privilege. But unfortunately, he lacked the financial backing to get him in the door. This scholarship will provide Kasim the opportunity to take his talents to the next phase.

We spoke with Kasim about community, what he’s most excited about as he prepares for Parsons, giving back, and his view of the industry’s future.

Ajai Kasim

Tell us more about yourself.

I’m someone very rooted in my community. I believe my community keeps me grounded, and with that grounding I want to create a foundation that propels a positive new artistic movement that strives to create the best future.

How did you hear about this award and why did you apply?

I went to Oakland School for the Arts and I was a fashion major there. My teacher told me about it knowing that I wanted to go to Parsons. I applied because I felt like this scholarship was perfect for me, and I knew I couldn’t go to the school I wanted without it.

What are you looking forward to the most at Parsons?

I’m really excited to start collaborating with other dope artists. That’s really what I live for. I love creating moments with amazing people.

When did you first get interested in fashion?

My interest in fashion started two years ago.

Where do you hope to be in 10 years?

I’m going to be a star. A known artist with a myriad of forms. Still grounded. Still rooted in where I come from. But in a position of power where I can provide safety and stability for me and those around me, and also find ways to give it back to my community.

Where do you see the fashion industry in 10 years?

I think the fashion industry is going to become extremely technological.
