With the mission of the CFDA being to strengthen the impact of American fashion in the global economy, we are always looking for new friends around the world. Enter Suntchi: A China-based branding and marketing company specializing in fashion, technology and entertainment, with whom the CFDA has entered a 5-year partnership to help CFDA Members navigate and expand their business in China.

Our trip east was a 3 day whirlwind.  Over lunch at one of Suntchi CEO Paul Fang’s favorite restaurants, Din Tai Fung, we discussed everything from the state of the Chinese retail business to how Chinese consumers approach ‘see now, buy now’.  We were excited that the Chinese consumer’s interest in American fashion brands is reaching critical mass. Truthfully, we were just as excited to be eating the best dumplings ever!

Over dinner at the Four Seasons, we met with major Chinese investors interested in connecting with American brands. It was an opportunity to learn more about the Chinese investment strategy and the progressive and inclusive way they view successful partnerships.

When the time finally rolled around for the press conference announcing our partnership, our hosts had generated so much buzz that we were met with a packed room of Chinese journalists from Business of Fashion to T Magazine, all interested in the CFDA and Suntchi’s plans.

Finally, a visit to the Jing’An Temple provided us with a moment of pure peace and serenity. The beautiful temple (built in 247 AD) features a solid gold Buddha that weighs over two tons.  As the tradition goes, when you burn incense you pray to Buddha with one wish for him to grant and you only return to the Temple once that wish has come true. Only time will tell!
