CFDA + The AIDS Memorial: Donna Karan Remembers Perry Ellis and 7th on Sale

December 1, 2017

Donna Karan

When the AIDS epidemic broke out, I went to Perry Ellis who was president of the CFDA at the time. I suggested that we take a store and get all the designers, photographers and models to donate samples, photos and objects of desire to raise money and awareness to AIDS.

Perry was the hippest and coolest designer at the time who inspired us all. He paved the way for all the young designers today.

After Perry’s death, the CFDA, with the help of Anna Wintour, created 7th on Sale. Ralph, Calvin, Oscar and all the people in the fashion world got together and donated. With an extraordinary opening gala and a three-day shopping experience we raised over $3 million and awareness to all. For me, that is where dressing and addressing was born. It was difficult for most people at that time to discuss AIDS. Elizabeth Taylor became a voice. Elton John just celebrated 25 years committed to ending AIDS in this world. Kenneth Cole is leading amfAR each year around the world.

Thank you to everyone who stood behind raising awareness and finding a cure for HIV/AIDS.

Love, Donna.
