After a long week of shows, the CFDA came together with MOTHER and I am a Voter to close out New York Fashion Week with a bang. This wasn’t just any average cocktail party. The three companies joined forces to bring out the fashion community for an important cause – to increase voter turnout. As the mid-term elections approach, the special event mobilized the influential fashion community to use their voice for change.
Hosted by CFDA CEO Steven Kolb, MOTHER Co-Founders Lela Becker and Tim Kaeding, and founder member of I am a Voter Debra Messing were joined by a group of designers, models, influencers, and notable faces from the world of fashion. Held at the Hotel Chelsea, guests included models Devon Windsor and Quannah Chasinghorse, designers Jonathan Cohen and Maria Cornejo, and editors Chioma Nnadi alongside actresses like Elziabeth Lail and Cathy Ang.
In addition to cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, guests were educated on the importance of voting by the evening’s hosts. Steven Kolb acknowledged onstage that more than eight million American who were too young to vote in 2020 will be eligible to vote, more than one in five newly eligible voters (ages 18-21) who were not registered to vote said it was because they did not know how, and that the voter turnout rate for the 2018 midterm election was only 47%.
Meanwhile, Debra Messing “every year millions of eligible voters are unable to cast their ballot because of a missed registration deadline, outdated registration information, or other problems with their voter registration. We want to make sure there’s no chance you’re going to have a problem on election day.”
As a solution, a custom QR code with a special Instagram Filter to spread the Go Vote message, along with a request to text VOTER to 26797 to check voter registration status.
