Catching up with Kevan Hall

Los Angeles designer Kevan Hall has been in the fashion business for well over two decades, cementing his name in the late 1990s when he took over the creative direction at Halston and brought a whole new celebrity clientele to the brand.

Fast forward to today, when Hall is best known for an unapologetic glamour that’s fit for galas, red carpets, and more. But for Spring-Summer 2023 collection, titled Hotelito, he added a new dimension.

“I am excited about this collection and see it as the future direction of the brand,” Hall said, speaking from Los Angeles. “It’s the colors, texture,  fabrics, and lots of new modern silhouettes that I designed this season. I am best known for evening and red carpet but within this category, I also gave a nod to American sportswear.”

Case and point, a 3-d lace top teamed with a hot pink ball-skirt featuring large cargo pockets. The reaction at trunk shows has been “incredible,” he added.

As esteemed fashion writer Teri Agins put it, “In Kevan’s deft hands, normally heavy tweeds and weighty beads floated down the runway in springtime perfection – light as a feather. The eyelet was sensational! He has his own mastery of technique that so many others simply lack. Kevan Hall’s Spring 2023 was a tour de force of stylish realness and the casting and pace of the show was old-school cool.”

Hall enjoys travel and this past summer, he spent some time with his friend Jenny Armit at her Hotelito boutique property in Todos Santos, Mexico.

“Hotelito has incredible colors which was the inspiration for the color story,” Hall noted. “Jenny and I were talking about her time growing up in London in the 1960s and 1970s, wearing hot pants, miniskirts, little sequined dresses; then, her time as a highly successful interior designer doing projects around the world and now being philanthropic with her casual lifestyle in Todos Santos.”

It’s a destination brimming with creatives and fresh perspectives. Hall, for his part, used the collection to launch a capsule of handbags and accessories made in Italy.

He’s also especially proud of his work with the Black Design Collective, of which he is a Co-founder. The Collective supports young designers through scholarships, workshops and mentorship programs, and it recently opened a creative space housing state-of-the-art equipment to create.

Asked about his view on the current state of fashion, Hall sees much to be encouraged by.

“I am excited about all the changes and newness also by the interest in sustainability and by the young talents entering our industry and looking to create fashion in their own way with their sensibility,” Hall noted. “Since COVID, weddings, galas and events are back on the calendar. People are searching for fabulous dresses to wear. We will continue to see more celebratory fashion.

“People,” he added, “want to feel good and have a bit of joy.”

Indeed, we do!
