“For me, Equity for black professionals in fashion is ownership, opportunity and transparency. Culturally and historically, we are a huge part of the inspiration behind many collections/projects season after season, yet we don’t get the recognition we deserve. Moreover, when the projects are being developed, rarely are we given the opportunity to be in those spaces to offer our talents and insights on what is being depicted. Black professionals in fashion deserve to be apart of the conversation and to be compensated fairly too.
Fostering sound relationships and communication is a huge foundation in the fashion industry. The gatekeepers need to be more open to mentorship and being transparent with black creatives to develop talent. It’s no secret that fashion house sometimes steal from young designers. Instead of thievery, why not invite that designer to help work on the collection or project? That way, they get their ideas out there and that experience can work as a huge stepping stone in their career. We are an incredibly talented and innovative bunch who want the opportunity to build and own our brands and/or contribute our gifts to legacy fashion houses. The creative teams in fashion studios and showrooms should reflect what the world looks like.
