Bob Mackie Receives Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award

May 2, 2019

Think Bob Mackie, and chances are you will remember that amazing moment Cher stepped on the 1986 Oscars red carpet in a naked-yet-dressed look replete with a raven-black feather headpiece for the ages (and ageless).

But that’s just one of countless iconic designs that Mackie was responsible for. Now, the designer – and just-revealed 2019 Tony Award nominee for The Cher Show  –  will receive the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards.

“Bob Mackie is one of the most prolific designers of all time,” said Steven Kolb, President and CEO of the CFDA. “He is a true artist and the ultimate showman.”

Our Board of Directors chose to honor the designer for his impact on American fashion, especially the way he has brought glamour to some of the world’s most illustrious personalities, from Diana Ross and Bette Midler to Carol Burnett and RuPaul.

Mackie started as a sketch artist, which led to designing the wardrobes for Mitzi Gaynor, Ann-Margret, The Carol Burnett Show, Cher’s tours, and Minnelli On Minnelli with Liza Minnelli, among others.

The 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards will be held on June 3rd at the Brooklyn Museum. We’re hoping for some fabulous, Unmistakably Mackie moments!
