Gender, tech, athleticism and energy – these are at the core of the Chromat philosophy. Designer Becca McCharen-Tran’s urban visionaries – call them chic city warriors if you like – now have the perfect beauty product to go with their dynamic lifestyle. In partnership with the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund (Becca was a 2015 finalist), M•A•C Cosmetics has collaborated with Chromat to create a color collection that reflects the designer’s ethos. From the architectural, bionic 3D-print packaging to such items as the #Shockvalue bright aqua blue lipstick, and the Metropolis Blue powerful royal blue Zoom Lash, the collection, available at select North American M•A•C locations and maccosmetics.com from June 29, is pure Becca.
We caught up with the designer to get her take on beauty, make-up and her thinking behind this uber-cool collaboration.
What was your philosophy behind the M•A•C collection? What did you want to accomplish with it?
Backstage at every Chromat runway show, we tell the models: “Walk strong, fast and powerful. You’re a woman taking over the world!” We emphasize direct eye contact and a strong stomp.
For the collection with M•A•C, we wanted to channel that unapologetic power and energy from the catwalk with a collection that emphasizes strong eyes and bold lips.
How in your view can cosmetics empower women?
Makeup is a chance to be whoever you want to be immediately, and then be a different person tomorrow. Makeup is transformative. It’s a personal revolution in a compact case.
Who do you see as the customer for it?
#ChromatBABES are bold, unique, fearless and creative in their lives and in their makeup routine. #ChromatBABES will try anything once, and have the confidence to pull off any look. We design for a highly creative, unapologetic woman — someone who isn’t scared by color or bold lines. The collection’s goal is to be bold, architectural and empowering.
Many of the pieces in the collection are named after #ChromatBABES who inspire us- like the DJ and artist Juliana Huxtable, model Sabina Karlsson and artist Lolita Bandita.
What kind of beauty/makeup tips do you?
Makeup tips? I am a fan of experimenting with new things. Makeup is so quick and malleable, why not?
