For Ana Khouri, her designs transcend the category of jewelry. She prefers to think of them as wearable works of art.
It is no surprise then that Khouri’s first solo exhibition is taking place at prestigious auction house Phillips – the opening of which the CFDA member celebrated on Thursday evening.
Called Jewels Now – Ana Khouri, this marks one of the few times the auction house has dedicated a sale to a contemporary jewelry designer. Although the Brazilian-born designer only launched her collection in 2013, her unique creations have garnered her significant attention and praise for their modern approach to high-jewelry. Viewers will find 50 of her creations available for purchase, 10 of which are new high-jewelry pieces exclusively made for the occasion. Highlights include a stunning tanzanite sapphire and diamond gloconda ring, an opulent diamond ring in her signature ‘Mirian’ style, and a lust-worthy Gold Crumble Bracelet. Prices range from $10,000 to $2 million.
This project makes perfect sense for Khouri given her extensive background as a painter and sculptor. After studying fine arts in São Paulo at the Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado, her artistic sensibilities organically transitioned into jewelry out of a desire to make pieces that spoke directly to the body.
“Being that Phillips is a combination of a major art institution and a respected auction house, working with them felt like an organic next step for me,” Khouri said. “They are very respected in their field and have a great reach..
“We never participated in any jewelry fairs or sales showrooms as we see our work as collectible pieces rather than a business to drive sales as most jewelry business,” she added. “For that reason, we believe showing our work with Phillips brings the right synergy to who be both are.”
Khouri’s collection will be on view at Phillips Auction House at 450 Park Ave., New York, through Sunday.
