If you are not familiar with Amelie Zilber, you’ve likely seen her on your feed. At just 20-years old, Zilber has built a huge online platform with a loyal following – and she has been using it to encourage change.
The outspoken young activist is one of the most politically engaged creators online, frequently sharing her thoughts on recent current events and educating her audience on how to get more involved.
Most recently, she interviewed Kamala Harris (yes, our current Vice President), and has spent her days campaigning for the New York Democrats ahead of the midterms. All that is in addition to her work as an actress onABC’s Grown-ish and fulfilling her duties as a UNICEF Ambassador. Zilber is also a budding fashion star: she is a Dior Ambassador and recently starred in a Ralph Lauren campaign for the brand’s latest fragrance.
Ahead of her CFDA Awards debut, we got ready with the talent at the Park Lane Hotel before the big night.
How does it feel to be attending your first CFDA Awards?
I am so excited to be in the same room with such influential change makers of American fashion. I’m over the moon!
Tell us about your look. What inspired tonight’s outfit?
I’m wearing Ralph Lauren, which to me just felt like the perfect choice for the occasion. Ralph is such a staple in American fashion. When we look back at the ‘90s, we see all these moments of pop culture and Ralph Lauren is so embedded into those moments – while simultaneously remaining timeless and classic. It’s the epitome of American fashion.
How would you describe your personal style?
Classic with a twist. I take a lot of my fashion inspiration from the female generations prior to me in my family. But I’m also 20 years old, so I throw trending pieces into my wardrobe to encapsulate a timeless yet trendy style. Also, I wear a lot of sweatpants!
What excites you about fashion right now?
I love how interconnected fashion is to culture and feminism. If you take a look at the 1960s, women at that time were faced with the burdens of workforce inequality and not having a full range of abilities in politics that men had. We saw the rise of miniskirts adjacent to the rise of second wave feminism. Miniskirts represented taking control back over the way that women’s bodies were perceived. They were worn to show that women were there, they were active, and they had control. What excites me most about fashion is the way it evolves according to the social movements we see in our culture.
What upcoming projects are you working on?
I just interviewed Kamala Harris and have been on the ground here in New York campaigning heavily on behalf of the New York Democrats. Right now, my immediate future looks like being involved in the electoral process and making sure people get out and vote!
In regards to the future I have a really exciting lineup of politicians I’m interviewing. Its truly so exciting to me – people are probably like “okay, next” – but for me its so exciting. After that, I’m going back to filming another season of Grown-ish. My life is just politics and acting.
